Why It Matters

Why You Need a Retaining Wall

Prevent Soil Erosion

Unretained slopes erode in Brisbane's heavy rain events. A retaining wall holds the soil in place and protects your garden, driveway and home foundations.

Create Usable Space

Terracing a sloped block transforms unusable hillside into level lawn, garden beds, entertaining areas or a flat driveway.

Protect Your Home

Soil movement against or beneath your home can crack foundations and cause structural damage. A correctly designed wall keeps soil where it belongs.

Wall Types

Types Of Retaining Walls We Build In Brisbane

Every site is different. We recommend the right wall type based on height, soil conditions, access, drainage and your aesthetic preferences.

Concrete block retaining wall in Brisbane
Most Popular

Concrete Block Walls

Interlocking or mortared concrete masonry blocks. Extremely strong, cost-effective and versatile. Suitable for both residential and commercial applications up to 3m.

Poured concrete retaining wall beside a modern driveway
Highest Strength

Poured Concrete Walls

Monolithic reinforced concrete walls formed in place. The strongest option for high-load situations, basement retaining or walls over 1.5m requiring engineer certification.

Timber sleeper retaining wall with garden planting
Natural Look

Timber Sleeper Walls

Hardwood or treated pine sleepers stacked horizontally in a soldier-pile frame. A warm, natural aesthetic that suits garden terracing and low-height applications up to 1.2m.

Steel sheet piling retaining wall in a residential landscape
Tight Spaces

Steel Sheet Piling

Corrugated steel sheets driven vertically into the ground. Ideal for tight access sites, deep excavations and temporary shoring where space is limited.

Gabion retaining wall with stone-filled cages in Brisbane
Best Drainage

Gabion Walls

Stone-filled wire mesh cages stacked to form a permeable, gravity-retaining structure. Excellent drainage, highly durable and gives a striking industrial or natural aesthetic.

Crib retaining wall on a landscaped slope
Large Sites

Crib Retaining Walls

Interlocking precast concrete or timber members form an open cellular structure filled with compacted fill. Suitable for steep slopes and large retaining projects.

Gravity retaining wall built from large stone blocks
Low Maintenance

Gravity Retaining Walls

Mass concrete or stone walls that rely on their own weight to resist lateral soil pressure. Simple, robust and maintenance-free. Typically used for lower heights up to 1m.

Segmental retaining wall with interlocking concrete blocks
Fast Build

Segmental Retaining Walls

Engineered dry-stacked concrete blocks that interconnect without mortar. Fast installation, flexible design and geogrid reinforcement available for greater heights.

Council Approval & Engineer Certification

In Queensland, retaining walls over 1m in height (or 1.5m in some Brisbane City Council zones) require development approval or a building permit. Walls over these heights also typically require a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) certificate. We handle all documentation and can connect you with a certified structural engineer if required.

Most retaining wall projects in Queensland trigger one or more compliance requirements. Here's what matters most:

Walls over 1m require building approval.

In Queensland, any retaining wall over 1 metre in height, measured from the natural ground level to the top of the wall, requires building approval from a private certifier or your local council. Some Brisbane City Council zones extend this to 1.5m under specific overlays - we'll confirm which applies to your property.

Walls over 1m need an RPEQ engineer certificate.

A Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) must design and certify any wall above the 1m threshold. The certificate covers structural integrity, drainage, footings, and load capacity - including any surcharge loads from driveways, pools, or buildings above.

Boundary walls need neighbour consent.

If your retaining wall sits on or affects a shared property boundary, you'll need written agreement from your neighbour before work begins. We can provide the documentation to make this conversation straightforward.

Tiered or stepped walls aren't a loophole.

Building multiple shorter walls stacked close together is treated as a single structure if the spacing is too tight, generally less than twice the height of the lower wall. Don't assume two 900mm walls automatically avoid approval - we'll assess the site properly.

Easements, sewers, and stormwater drains add restrictions.

Walls built near council infrastructure or on easements require additional approval from the relevant authority, even if the wall is under 1m.

What we handle for you:

  • Pre-construction site assessment and height check
  • Building approval lodgement through a private certifier
  • Connection with a trusted RPEQ structural engineer
  • Drainage design that meets QBCC standards
  • Final inspection coordination and Form 16 certification
